State Requirements - Education, Licensure, and Certification
- Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university, including a minimum of 24 semester hours of coursework in communication sciences and disorders, broken down as follows:
- 9 semester hours in foundational courses covering normal human growth and development, psychology, and normal development and use of speech, hearing, and language
- 15 semester hours in courses covering speech, hearing, and language disorders, general phonetics, basic articulation, screening and therapy, basic audiometry, or auditory training
- Valid Florida Speech-Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA) license, issued by the Florida Board of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology (Florida Department of Health)
- Completion of a minimum of 100 supervised clinical practicum hours (80 hours of direct patient/student services and 20 hours of indirect services), under the supervision of an ASHA-certified Speech-Language Pathologist
- Completion of three required ASHA prerequisite courses (1 hour each): Ethics, Universal Safety Precautions, and Patient/Client/Student Confidentiality
- Must work under the direct supervision of a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist at all times; SLPAs may not provide independent services
Typical Job Duties
- Assist the supervising Speech-Language Pathologist in providing speech, language, and communication services to students with IEPs
- Conduct speech and language screenings under the direction and supervision of the SLP
- Implement planned therapy activities and treatment programs as designed by the supervising SLP
- Document student progress, session notes, and data as directed by the supervising SLP
- Assist during evaluations and assessments as assigned by the supervising SLP
- Communicate with teachers, school staff, and families as directed by the supervising SLP
- Maintain accurate records in compliance with district, state, and federal requirements
- Wear required identification indicating assistant status at all times during service delivery
