If you are looking for a place with a sense of permanence, pride, and stability, then South Dakota is where you need to take your next SLP job. In the Black Hills, Mount Rushmore is the 6,200-foot monument depicting a few of the most evolutionary leaders in US history. Sculptor Gutzon Borglum began carving the images of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln in 1927 and completed the $1 million project 14 years later. With the discovery of gold in the Black Hills in 1874, treasure-hunting settlers quickly populated South Dakota. The Black Hills earned its moniker from the Lakota, who dubbed the area Paha Sapa, which means “hills that are black” – indeed they do appear black from a distance. South Dakota is home to the Dakota, Lakota and Nakota tribes, which together constitute the Sioux Nation.
Badlands National Park consists of 244,000 acres of land dotted with pinnacles, spires, and deeply eroded buttes and is the largest protected mixed grass prairie in the US. Fossil beds there date back 23 to 25 million years old. Custer State Park is home to a herd of 1,500 free-roaming bison. Jewel Cave, the third-longest cave in the world, is a tribute to the calcite crystals embedded in the walls that glitter when illuminated. South Dakota also is home to the Flaming Fountain on the State Capitol Lake, which is fed by an artesian well with such a high natural gas content that it can be lit. Clark is the Potato Capital of South Dakota, and not surprisingly, is also home to the world famous Mashed Potato Wrestling contest. Now who would dare miss that?
