Fossil beds there date back 23 to 25 million years old. Custer State Park is home to a herd of 1,500 free-roaming bison. Jewel Cave, the third-longest cave in the world, is a tribute to the calcite crystals embedded in the walls that glitter when illuminated. South Dakota also is home to the Flaming Fountain on the State Capitol Lake, which is fed by an artesian well with such a high natural gas content that it can be lit.
