Of course, Jamestown was the first permanent North American settlement and paying homage to the sacrifices made there by our forefathers seems fitting. More than half of the 4,000 civil war battles that took place were fought in Virginia and the frequent reenactments are at the same time fascinating and frightening.
Present day Virginia is equally intriguing. Assateague Island National Seashore is accessible from the south via Chincoteague Island and from Maryland to the north.
