Speech Language Pathologist - Apraxia Specialist | Rochester Hills, MI
Lead exceptional outcomes for students with childhood apraxia of speech through specialized motor speech therapy in our innovative virtual education platform. We're seeking a speech language pathologist with advanced expertise in apraxia intervention who excels at delivering intensive motor-based therapy through teletherapy.
Role Framework
Deliver specialized speech therapy services for a caseload of 38-46 students weekly, maintaining 36 hours in our virtual education environment. Your apraxia expertise will serve students with motor speech disorders requiring intensive, systematic intervention through evidence-based motor learning approaches.
Apraxia Assessment and Diagnosis
- Conduct comprehensive motor speech evaluations differentiating apraxia from other disorders
- Administer apraxia-specific assessment tools including VMPAC and DEMSS
- Assess speech sound inventory, vowel accuracy, and prosodic features
- Evaluate oral motor skills and sequencing abilities for speech production
- Determine severity and characteristics of childhood apraxia of speech
- Document diagnostic features including groping, inconsistent errors, and prosodic difficulties
- Differentiate CAS from phonological disorders and dysarthria
Motor-Based Intervention Approaches
- Implement Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing (DTTC) for apraxia treatment
- Utilize PROMPT techniques for motor speech production and planning
- Apply Rapid Syllable Transition Treatment (ReST) for multisyllabic words
- Implement integral stimulation and movement-based therapy approaches
- Use tactile and visual cueing strategies supporting motor learning
- Provide intensive practice opportunities with appropriate feedback schedules
- Address prosody and intonation through melodic approaches
Systematic Treatment Planning
- Design intensive treatment schedules maximizing motor learning principles
- Implement massed practice sessions with appropriate frequency and duration
- Progress systematically through speech complexity hierarchies
- Monitor accuracy and consistency across treatment stimuli
- Adjust treatment targets based on motor learning principles
- Implement home practice programs supporting intensive intervention
- Coordinate with parents on carryover activities and practice schedules
Collaborative Care Coordination
- Consult with neurologists and developmental pediatricians on apraxia diagnosis
- Collaborate with occupational therapists addressing oral motor and sensory needs
- Partner with parents providing education on apraxia characteristics and prognosis
- Connect families with childhood apraxia support groups and resources
- Coordinate with private therapists for intensive service delivery models
- Advocate for appropriate service frequency and intensity for motor learning
- Provide ongoing education to educational teams on apraxia support strategies
Professional Requirements
- Master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology
- ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC-SLP)
- Current Michigan Speech-Language Pathology license
- 2+ years of school-based speech therapy experience
- Specialized training in childhood apraxia of speech assessment and treatment
- Certification or training in PROMPT, DTTC, or other motor speech approaches preferred
- Experience with intensive motor speech intervention protocols
- Strong understanding of motor learning principles and application
