Remote SLP - Middle School Specialist | Southfield, MI
Empower middle school students to develop communication competencies essential for academic success and social belonging. We're seeking a speech language pathologist who specializes in grades 6-8 and excels at addressing the unique communication challenges of early adolescence through relevant virtual therapy.
Role Structure
Deliver speech-language services for approximately 46-54 students in grades 6-8, working 36.5 hours weekly in our virtual middle school program. Your expertise will help pre-adolescent and early adolescent students strengthen language skills, social communication, and self-advocacy abilities during this critical developmental period.
Middle School Language Services
- Assess academic language skills needed for middle school curriculum success
- Target vocabulary development across content areas including science and social studies
- Develop complex sentence structures and paragraph-level organization skills
- Address figurative language comprehension including idioms and multiple meanings
- Support written expression and essay organization for academic assignments
- Implement metacognitive strategies for reading comprehension and studying
- Provide executive functioning support for planning and organizing schoolwork
Social Communication Development
- Address peer relationship communication skills and friendship building
- Target conversational skills appropriate for middle school social contexts
- Support students navigating social hierarchy and peer group dynamics
- Implement social problem-solving strategies for conflict resolution
- Address perspective-taking and theory of mind for social understanding
- Support students with social anxiety related to communication
- Facilitate small group social communication sessions with age-matched peers
Academic Support and Study Skills
- Deliver curriculum-based intervention aligned with middle school standards
- Support note-taking strategies from lectures and textbook reading
- Address test preparation and test-taking communication strategies
- Target presentation skills for class projects and oral reports
- Provide organizational strategies for managing multiple classes and assignments
- Support transition to increased academic language demands of middle school
- Integrate therapy with Common Core standards and state requirements
Adolescent Identity and Self-Advocacy
- Support students developing awareness of their communication strengths and needs
- Teach self-advocacy skills for requesting help and accommodations
- Address communication confidence during early adolescent development
- Support students with changing voice characteristics during puberty
- Facilitate discussions about communication differences and acceptance
- Provide counseling support related to communication challenges impacting self-esteem
- Build independence in managing therapy goals and home practice
Professional Requirements
- Master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology
- ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC-SLP)
- Valid Michigan Speech-Language Pathology license
- 2+ years of experience with middle school or early adolescent populations
- Strong understanding of early adolescent development and communication needs
- Knowledge of middle school curriculum demands and expectations
- Experience delivering virtual therapy to pre-teens and young teens
- Ability to connect authentically with middle school students
Middle School Specialization
- Expertise in language assessment and intervention for grades 6-8
- Understanding of social-emotional development during early adolescence
- Knowledge of middle school academic language and literacy expectations
- Experience addressing peer relationship and social dynamics issues
- Familiarity with executive functioning challenges in middle school students
- Ability to address sensitive topics related to identity and self-esteem
- Strong consultation skills with middle school educators and counselors
