Speech Language Pathologist - Early Intervention Focus | Troy, MI
Make critical developmental impacts through expert early language intervention with preschool and early elementary students. We're seeking a speech language pathologist who specializes in early childhood communication disorders and loves working with young learners in engaging virtual play-based therapy sessions.
Position Overview
Provide therapy for 40-48 students weekly, primarily ages 3-7, working 36.5 hours in our virtual early childhood program. Your expertise in early language development will support young children with language delays, autism spectrum disorders, and developmental disabilities through developmentally appropriate teletherapy.
Early Language Intervention
- Assess early language comprehension and expression using play-based measures
- Target vocabulary expansion through thematic play activities and daily routines
- Build two-word combinations progressing to simple sentence formulation
- Develop question comprehension and answering across WH-question types
- Implement following directions activities from simple to multi-step commands
- Address concept development including spatial, temporal, and quantity concepts
- Support symbolic play development and early narrative skills through storytelling
Play-Based Teletherapy
- Deliver engaging virtual therapy using toys, books, and interactive games
- Utilize music, movement, and songs promoting language learning and engagement
- Implement parent-child interaction therapy techniques virtually with coaching
- Create virtual sensory and play experiences supporting language goals
- Use animated videos and age-appropriate apps for motivation and learning
- Facilitate parallel play activities with parent support and participation
- Adapt traditional play-based therapy approaches for virtual effectiveness
Parent Coaching and Support
- Coach parents in language facilitation strategies during daily routines and activities
- Demonstrate language modeling, expansion, and extension techniques in real-time
- Provide specific home activities reinforcing therapy targets and developmental skills
- Address parent questions about language development milestones and concerns
- Support families navigating early intervention to preschool transitions
- Create video demonstrations for parents to reference between therapy sessions
- Celebrate developmental progress and empower parent confidence as communication partners
Developmental Services
- Support children transitioning from early intervention services to preschool
- Address feeding and oral motor skills impacting early communication development
- Provide consultation on augmentative communication for late talkers
- Support children with Down syndrome and other genetic conditions
- Address communication needs of children with hearing loss or auditory processing
- Implement naturalistic developmental behavioral intervention approaches
- Collaborate with developmental pediatricians and early intervention teams
Required Qualifications
- Master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology
- ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC-SLP)
- Active Michigan Speech-Language Pathology license
- 2+ years of experience with early childhood populations and development
- Strong knowledge of typical and atypical early language development
- Training in parent coaching models like Hanen or similar programs
- Experience engaging young children through virtual platforms
- Patience and creativity for working with preschool-age learners
Early Childhood Expertise
- Understanding of developmental milestones from birth through age 7
- Knowledge of play-based assessment and intervention approaches
- Familiarity with early childhood special education systems and transitions
- Skills in family-centered practice and parent education
- Experience with toddlers and preschoolers with developmental delays
- Understanding of attachment and relationship-based intervention
- Knowledge of sensory processing and its impact on communication
Early Childhood Teletherapy Skills
- Ability to capture and maintain young children's attention virtually
- Skills in supporting parent participation during virtual therapy sessions
- Access to age-appropriate digital materials and virtual manipulatives
- Understanding of developmental appropriateness for teletherapy modalities
- Warm, playful demeanor engaging young learners through online platforms
