Transform social communication outcomes for students with autism spectrum disorders through expert pragmatic language intervention. We're seeking a speech language pathologist specializing in social thinking, perspective-taking, and conversational skills who excels at creating meaningful social learning experiences in virtual formats.

Position Details

Support 44-52 students weekly, primarily those with autism and social communication challenges, working 37.5 hours in our virtual program. Your expertise will help students develop friendship skills, understand social expectations, and navigate complex social situations through structured social communication groups and individual therapy.

Social Communication Intervention

  • Assess pragmatic language skills including topic maintenance and conversational turn-taking
  • Implement Social Thinking curriculum and frameworks in virtual environments
  • Target perspective-taking skills through video modeling and social scenarios
  • Develop nonverbal communication understanding including facial expressions and body language
  • Address figurative language comprehension including idioms, sarcasm, and humor
  • Build conversational skills including initiating, maintaining, and ending conversations appropriately
  • Support emotional regulation and communication during challenging social situations

Group Therapy Facilitation

  • Lead virtual social skills groups matched by age and skill level
  • Create structured activities promoting peer interaction and collaboration
  • Facilitate role-play scenarios practicing social problem-solving strategies
  • Implement video self-modeling for social skill awareness and growth
  • Use social stories and comic strip conversations addressing specific situations
  • Provide in-the-moment coaching during peer interactions and conflicts
  • Structure cooperative games teaching turn-taking and sportsmanship

Autism-Specific Strategies

  • Implement visual supports and schedules promoting understanding and predictability
  • Use special interests as motivators for social engagement and learning
  • Address sensory considerations impacting communication and participation
  • Support executive functioning related to social planning and organization
  • Teach explicit social rules and expectations through direct instruction
  • Provide scripts and frameworks for navigating new social situations
  • Collaborate with behavioral specialists on communication-behavior connections

Intervention Programs and Approaches

  • Utilize PEERS curriculum for adolescent social skills development
  • Implement Social Thinking vocabulary and frameworks across age levels
  • Apply Zones of Regulation for emotional awareness and regulation
  • Use Superflex curriculum addressing thinking patterns and flexibility
  • Incorporate mindfulness techniques for social anxiety management
  • Implement Comic Strip Conversations and Social Stories methodologies
  • Apply collaborative problem-solving approaches for conflict resolution

Professional Requirements

  • Master's degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders
  • Current ASHA CCC-SLP certification
  • Valid Michigan Speech-Language Pathology license
  • 2+ years of experience working with autism spectrum disorders
  • Training in Social Thinking, PEERS, or similar evidence-based programs
  • Strong understanding of autism characteristics and interventions
  • Experience facilitating social skills groups virtually
  • Ability to create structured yet flexible social learning opportunities

Specialized Competencies

  • Knowledge of autism spectrum characteristics across developmental levels
  • Understanding of sensory processing and its impact on communication
  • Experience with visual supports and structured teaching approaches
  • Familiarity with applied behavior analysis principles and integration
  • Skills in addressing co-occurring anxiety and communication challenges
  • Ability to collaborate with behavioral interventionists and autism specialists
  • Understanding of neurodiversity-affirming practices and perspectives

Virtual Social Skills Delivery

  • Proficiency with breakout rooms for peer interaction activities
  • Skills in using digital games promoting social engagement and learning
  • Ability to facilitate peer interaction through virtual platforms effectively

  • Comfortable managing group dynamics in online settings with diverse needs
