Speech Language Pathologist - Middle & High School | Dearborn, MI
Empower adolescent students to develop advanced communication competencies essential for academic success and adult independence. We're recruiting a speech language pathologist who specializes in secondary populations and excels at addressing complex language, social communication, and transition needs through relevant virtual therapy.
Role Framework
Deliver speech-language services for approximately 42-50 students in grades 6-12, working 36 hours weekly in our virtual secondary program. Your expertise will help adolescent students strengthen language processing, executive functioning, social pragmatics, and self-advocacy skills needed for college, career, and community success.
Advanced Language Services
- Assess higher-order language including inferencing, reasoning, and abstract thinking
- Target academic vocabulary across content areas supporting curriculum access
- Develop complex sentence structures and cohesive discourse abilities
- Address figurative language including metaphors, idioms, and multiple meanings
- Support written language organization for essays and research papers
- Implement metacognitive strategies for comprehension and learning
- Provide executive function support for planning and organizing communication
Transition-Focused Intervention
- Address workplace communication skills for employment readiness
- Support college-level communication including note-taking and presentations
- Teach self-advocacy skills for requesting accommodations and disclosing needs
- Develop interview skills and professional communication competencies
- Target resume writing and application completion abilities
- Support independent living communication needs and daily interactions
- Facilitate transition IEP goals related to postsecondary communication
Career and College Preparation
- Integrate therapy with career exploration and vocational planning activities
- Address communication demands of specific career pathways and interests
- Support SAT/ACT accommodations and test-taking communication strategies
- Provide guidance on college disability services navigation and disclosure
- Target networking and professional relationship-building skills
- Address digital literacy and appropriate online communication etiquette
- Support presentation skills for college admissions and scholarship applications
Adolescent-Centered Approach
- Use age-appropriate, relevant materials reflecting teen interests and concerns
- Respect student autonomy and involve teens in goal development and planning
- Address real-world scenarios and authentic communication situations
- Incorporate current events and topics meaningful to adolescent populations
- Build rapport through understanding of teen development and social concerns
- Provide counseling support related to communication challenges and self-esteem
- Foster independence and self-directed learning strategies for lifelong success
Professional Requirements
- Master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology
- ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC-SLP)
- Valid Michigan Speech-Language Pathology license
- 2+ years of experience with secondary or transition-age students
- Strong understanding of adolescent language development and academic needs
- Knowledge of postsecondary transition planning and requirements
- Experience delivering virtual therapy to teenage populations
- Ability to connect authentically with and motivate high school students
Specialized Knowledge
- Expertise in higher-level language assessment and intervention techniques
- Understanding of executive functioning and metacognitive processes
- Knowledge of transition services and adult life preparation requirements
- Familiarity with college and career readiness standards and expectations
- Experience with language-based learning disabilities in adolescent populations
- Understanding of social-emotional aspects of communication disorders
- Strong consultation skills with secondary educators and school counselors
