Speech Language Pathologist - AAC Specialist | Orlando, FL
Transform communication access for non-verbal and minimally verbal students through expert augmentative and alternative communication services. We're recruiting a speech language pathologist passionate about AAC who excels at evaluating, implementing, and supporting high-tech and low-tech communication systems in virtual educational settings.
Role Framework
Support 38-46 students weekly with significant focus on AAC users and candidates, working 36 hours in our virtual platform. Your AAC expertise will help students with complex communication needs access robust communication systems, from picture exchange to speech-generating devices and communication apps.
AAC Assessment and Implementation
- Conduct comprehensive AAC evaluations assessing communication abilities and needs
- Trial multiple AAC systems determining optimal match for individual students
- Program communication devices with customized vocabulary and organization
- Train students in device navigation and communication skill development
- Implement aided language stimulation modeling communication device use
- Support transition from low-tech to high-tech AAC systems
- Collaborate with assistive technology teams on device selection and funding
Communication Partner Training
- Provide extensive parent training on AAC strategies and device support
- Train classroom teachers in implementing aided language input
- Coach educational teams on presuming competence and providing access
- Develop visual supports and communication boards for multiple environments
- Create core vocabulary displays and activity-specific page sets
- Lead professional development on AAC best practices and implementation
- Facilitate communication partner strategy sessions with multidisciplinary teams
Technology Integration
- Program Proloquo2Go, TouchChat, and other popular AAC applications
- Customize vocabulary organization using evidence-based approaches
- Integrate switch access and alternative access methods for motor challenges
- Troubleshoot technical issues with communication devices and software
- Stay current on emerging AAC technologies and assessment tools
- Collaborate with vendors on device trials and technical support
- Document device programming and customization for continuity
Professional Requirements
- Master's degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders
- Current ASHA CCC-SLP certification
- Valid Florida Speech-Language Pathology license
- 2+ years of school experience with AAC specialization strongly preferred
- Training in AAC assessment and implementation methodologies
- Proficiency with major AAC apps and speech-generating devices
- Strong technical skills for device programming and troubleshooting
- Passion for advocating for communication rights and access
Virtual AAC Service Delivery
- Expertise in providing AAC services through teletherapy platforms
- Ability to remotely support device programming and troubleshooting
- Skills in training communication partners virtually
- Access to AAC software and app subscriptions for evaluation
- Familiarity with remote AAC assessment protocols and best practices
