Job Description: We are actively seeking a highly skilled and passionate Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) to join our high school team in Indianapolis, IN. This full-time contract position, running from August 1, 2025, to May 29, 2026, will focus primarily on supporting our life skills student population, many of whom are non-verbal. You will collaborate closely with another dedicated SLP to manage a caseload of approximately 50-70 students, providing specialized communication services tailored to their unique needs.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct comprehensive speech and language evaluations for high school students in the life skills program, including those who are non-verbal, to determine eligibility for services.
- Develop, write, and implement highly individualized education programs (IEPs) with a strong emphasis on functional communication goals, utilizing various Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) systems and strategies.
- Provide direct speech and language therapy services to high school life skills students, individually and in small groups, addressing a wide range of communication needs, including:
- Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) implementation and training (low-tech, high-tech, PECS, core vocabulary, etc.).
- Functional communication skills for daily living and community integration.
- Social communication within various contexts and peer interactions.
- Understanding and use of visual supports and communication boards.
- Addressing pre-linguistic and emerging communication skills.
- Dysphagia/feeding support (if within scope of practice and need arises).
- Monitor student progress rigorously, collect systematic data, and adjust therapy plans as needed to ensure optimal functional outcomes.
- Collaborate extensively with special education teachers, life skills staff, parents, administrators, and other related service providers (e.g., occupational therapists, physical therapists, behavior specialists) to create cohesive and supportive learning environments.
- Actively participate in IEP meetings, case conferences, and other relevant school-based meetings.
- Maintain accurate, compliant, and timely documentation of student services, progress, attendance, and communication logs in accordance with district, state (Indiana Department of Education), and federal guidelines.
- Educate school staff and parents on communication strategies, AAC use, and ways to support non-verbal and minimally verbal students.
- Participate in ongoing professional development relevant to high school life skills and AAC.
Qualifications:
- Master's or doctoral degree in Speech-Language Pathology from a program accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CAA) by ASHA.
- Must possess and maintain the Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC-SLP) from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) to be considered.
- Must possess and maintain an active Indiana Speech-Language Pathologist license issued by the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency (IPLA).
- Must possess and maintain an active Indiana Teaching Certificate (specific to Speech-Language Pathology) issued by the Indiana Department of Education.
- Prior experience working with high school-aged students, particularly those in life skills programs, and a strong background with non-verbal communication and AAC systems is highly preferred.
- Thorough knowledge of federal (IDEA) and Indiana state special education laws and regulations.
- Demonstrated ability to assess, plan, and implement effective interventions for students with complex communication needs.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and collaborative skills to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team and with families.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail for managing a caseload and documentation.
- A compassionate and patient approach, with a strong commitment to supporting students with diverse abilities.
