Rhode Island covers an area of only 1,214 square miles and is the smallest state size-wise in the US. While it is only 48 miles “tall” and 37 miles across, it would be a shame to not take an SLP job here, because a lot is packed into such a small area. Look at it this way – it’s so small you actually may have a chance to see and do everything during your speech therapy assignment! Parenting magazine ranked Rhode Island as the “Safest Place to Raise Children.” The Capital of Providence built an open air, waterside amphitheater that features live entertainment in the summer and a WaterFire display with gondola rides available for after-dark aficionados.
Being right along the water, Rhode Island has many other sites to see as well. Block Island, an hour-long ferry ride from Port Judith is great for a day trip. On Water Street in Old Town, there are porch-side restaurants, cafes, coffee shops, boutiques and ample spots to people watch. Crescent Beach is nearby enough to walk to and if you are so motivated, visit Great Salt Pond for the best of both worlds (salt water on one side of the street and “fresh” water on the other). Newport’s Cliffwalk also makes for a fun day, or two! The 3.5 mile elevated walk winds along Newport’s shoreline with Narragansett Bay below and some of the most over-the-top mansions alongside. There are enough hip bars, cozy bed & breakfasts, and old-fashioned restaurants to keep any speech therapist entertained during their next SLP job.
